POPAT Training

POPAT…Police Officer Physical Abilities Test
CBSA…Canada Border Services Agency PARE
SOPAT…Sheriff Officer Physical Abilities Test
COPAT…Correctional Officer Physical Abilities Test

Do you think you have what it takes to pass the PARE, Physical Abilities Requirement Evaluation…

Can you go 100% for four plus minutes without blowing up and exhausting your energy tank? When was the last time you sprinted hard for one minute, carried 100lbs.bag 50ft., ran stairs, did any kind of vertical jumping, hurdles or burpees? Can you do ten push ups in a row, run five km in under 30 minutes? Do you have the upper body strength to hold the push-pull machine in place? If you are struggling to meet any of the physical requirements for any of these tests, then you’ve come to the right place, I can help you.

You have two options, Personal Training or group classes. I strongly suggest you start with Personal Training, as it’s all about you. We will focus on your goals, any specific areas of weakness and build on your strengths. You need to start training sooner than you think, a minimum of two months if you want to pass the POPAT test in under four minutes.

If you prefer group classes, we train everything! I don’t believe in one model / style of training. You need to be able to move quickly and lift heavy objects…that’s what we do. Saturday’s Mudder / Obstacle course training is perfect for you, that being said, this is not a class for beginners or if you haven’t worked out in a while. I would suggest a Personal Training session first to establish exactly where you’re at. Check out the gym’s FaceBook and Instagram feed, to get a good idea of what we’re all about and the style of workouts we do. What are you waiting for, let’s DO THIS!

POPAT Success Stories

I am proud to say that I am one of Mel’s many success stories. Before joining Mel-Fit, I was lost and looking for a personal trainer to guide me through training for the POPAT (Police Officer Physical Abilities Test) which needs to be passed more than once to become a municipal police officer in BC. I needed a specific program that focused on the key aspects of this physical test. I knew that I could not achieve this goal on my own and that is why I reached out to Mel about two years ago and I am sure glad I did. Through months of one on one and group training sessions, Mel helped me meet my target weight and fitness level and she was there every step of the way. Mel would go above and beyond to make sure I was accountable for attending each session, checking in on me throughout the week and if I was having a bad day or not feeling it she would push me in the right way as I knew she truly cared about my overall progression and well-being both physically and mentally. Mel Fit’s gym atmosphere is the exact environment that I needed; a family and it kept me wanting to go back for more. I have been honored to workout alongside the utmost positive group of people who have supported my journey. Mel is an absolute rock star and professional and extremely knowledgeable in her craft. She adapts for the needs of all her clients while still giving us the confidence that we can do any exercise at the gym. She is the ultimate fitness recipe: 1 part knowledge, 1 part care, 1 part compassion, 1 part motivator and 1 part role model…mixed all together with a bit of love = the perfect person in your corner. She truly cares about you, gets to know you on a personal level, and since joining Mel Fit and working with Mel I would never go anywhere else. Without Mel I certainly would not have passed the POPAT and I give much of the credit to her! Even after successfully become an officer and graduating in July 2022, I have stayed on my fitness journey with Mel and will continue to do so. I cannot wait to see my future successes in the gym and I know Mel will be right beside me cheering me on.

Thank you to Mel!

I first got introduced to Mel when I was training for the POPAT during the early phases of the COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020. I remember my first 1v1 training session with Mel like it was yesterday… Let’s just say I walked into the gym thinking that I would likely be able to last the one-hour session no problem… I quickly realized that the “runs” and 5 days a week “gym routine” that I was doing would not get me to my goals of passing the POPAT. I recall talking to Mel after the first session and having a down to earth conversation of where I was fitness wise and where I needed to get to in order to achieve my goal. Mel was able to quickly identify what I needed to focus on and was upfront with me about the fact that I needed to be comfortable being uncomfortable while training.

I soon joined Mel Fit as a regular member and began attending the regular group classes. I had never been into group fitness classes, however I realized that Mel Fit was different. I found these classes amazing as the workouts were already planned out and all I had to do was show up and be ready to work! Mel has created an environment where she keeps you motivated, helps you improve, and holds you accountable all while creating an inclusive team environment where everyone is focused on their own individual goals, yet the training sessions still have a team vibe to it. Additionally, one thing that sets Mel apart from other coaches and gyms is that she genuinely cares about her people and is always there to support and guide them no matter what the obstacle or hurdle might be.

I am happy to say that within 3 months of working out with Mel I was able to not only pass the POPAT, but I was able to achieve a “competitive” POPAT time. I can also proudly say that over two years later, I am still working out at Mel Fit and don’t plan on stopping anytime soon!!
Thank you Mel!!
